DAVID LEONARD BRIGGS

RECORDING MUSICIAN
GOLDFINCH is Briggs's second studio album, following a long hiatus in which he built a name as a poet in the UK, publishing four collections with Salt Publishing. Returning to work as a recording artist, Briggs builds these new songs on the firm foundations of his storytelling nous and word-smithery, but this is also a richly musical project from a deft guitarist, mellifluous singer, and intuitive instrumentalist. The songs were written in Brittany and Somerset. They were recorded and mixed in Briggs's home studio in Somerset.
David Leonard Briggs blends influences from English folk with country blues and modern Americana to produce plangent songs of loss and of love.
Written, produced, played, sung, recorded and mixed by David Leonard Briggs.
Mastered by Tom S. Ray at Audio Unity, Glasgow.

Opening track - 'Own Kind of Light'
My first album, Landscape and Liability came out with Unreal Records, a small independent record label, literally last century, in 1999. It's so long ago. And since then, poetry has been my primary creative focus (as the rest of this website illustrates).
The project was generously financed by Treflyn Lloyd-Roberts of Unreal Records, and skilfully produced by Rob Alderton at RA Studios. I was pretty callow back then, but I had a few good songs, and Treflyn and Rob, along with pianist Marcus Gomm and flautist Justin Whitlock, helped to turn them into something.
Unfortunately, my life somewhat capsized pretty soon after release, and by the time I'd got things back on an even keel, the moment had passed. But for the archive, here's a couple tracks I think I'd still stand by.
'A Woman Homer Sung'
(
words by W. B. Yeats)
'Backgammon'

Having recently moved to Somerset, I now have enough space for my own garage studio.
Goldfinch was recorded and mixed here at Strawberry Fields Studio.
